A Facebook employee at the company's Menlo Park headquarters warned Glassdoor visitors not to believe all the negative press. Some of these factors could be reasons why the rankings of the tech companies in the Glassdoor list are generally down this year. Last month, a former manager at the company shared a memo he'd sent to all Facebook employees stating the social network has a "black people problem".
To compile the Top 100 Best Places to Work list, Glassdoor pulls data from surveys that ask USA -based employees about career opportunities, compensation, senior management, work/life balance, culture, and more.
Facebook's year of controversy appears to have taken its toll on the company's consistent top ranking in Glassdoor's Best Places to Work list.
Four companies have made the list for the past four years- Starbucks, Apple, video game maker Ubisoft, and human resources software company Ceridian, according to Glassdoor.
"In today's tight labour market, job seekers are in the driver's seat when it comes to deciding where to work and they want to know the inner workings of a company before accepting a new job", said Dr. Andrew Chamberlain, Glassdoor Chief Economist. Boston Consulting Group 6.
The workers have weighed in, and the best companies to work for run the gamut of industries-including tech, food, travel, and apparel, according to Glassdoor's extensive annual survey.
Facebook, which was No. 1 a year ago, dropped to No. 7 for 2019, going from a 4.6 rating to a 4.5 rating among USA -based employees.
Facebook has suffered a recent string of high-profile missteps, pertaining to data privacy and potential biases.
Google has also made headlines this year, after employees began to speak out against company policies. Workers' concerns - and protests - over how the military could use Google's technology contributed to executives' decision to pull a bid for a $10 billion cloud contract with the Pentagon. Facebook ranked No. 1 for five of the past eight years. In the first quarter of 2018, Facebook's employee satisfaction rating was at 4.6. One review cited the company's support of employee goals as a perk of employment.
Employee reviews cited the company's culture and community events as pluses.
