"I was hoping that either the referee or the corner was going to stop that fight".
"Why keep cutting that weight? I think there's some big things for him at 155".
"I made the weight, I made it look easy", he said.
And considering the fact that McGregor's decision win over Holloway back in 2013 was the last time the Hawaiian was defeated inside the octagon, the prospect of a rematch makes a lot of sense. He lost his first-ever UFC fight to Dustin Poirier when he was 20 years old. Holloway got hit a couple times but he was completely unfazed and he continued to overwhelm Ortega, whose left eye swelled up considerably in the round.
There's some justification and precedent for such a move, too.
That fight would make each a boatload of money, pitting an elite striker against a tremendous grappler.
That may mean that Tony Ferguson could be brought into play. He already has a history with the current lightweight champion Nurmagomedov.
Ortega's first shot at UFC gold shouldn't be written off as a Holloway mauling because he did enjoy his moments but that Hawaiian spirit was not to be broken and the doctors ultimately refused to let Ortega answer the horn for the fifth.
White also is glad the fight was stopped when it was.
Dustin Poirier is in the thick of it at the top of the UFC's lightweight division and is in the form of his life.
The UFC 231 main event is officially a go. Despite doctors proving unable to come to terms on a diagnosis for what happened, Holloway powered through amid a vocal minority questioning whether him fighting so soon was the right move. But Poirier's fighting style and relevance at 155lbs would make it a ideal pick for Holloway's homecoming bout.
If you're looking for a non-title fight between two hugely-popular fighters that could easily headline a pay-per-view, with or without championship gold on the line, Holloway versus Nate Diaz would be a hugely popular pick.
After claiming the win, Shevchenko paid tribute to her opponent, saying: "I'm very happy that I get this belt in this fight with Joanna, because she is very professional". After all of that, Holloway didn't skip a beat and put on probably the best performance of his career. And if Diaz is in the mood for a scrap, the pair could serve up one of the fights of 2019.
Holloway is a slight favorite to retain the Featherweight title at (-115), though Ortega isn't far off with odds of (-105).
