Sheriff's deputy speaks to a potential witness as they stand near the scene, November 8, 2018, in Thousand Oaks, Calif. where a gunman opened fire Wednesday inside a country dance bar crowded with hundreds of people.
At least 12 people have been killed, including a police officer, at a country music bar in Thousand Oaks, California.
Long then opened fire inside the bar, where he exchanged shots with Ventura County Sheriff's Sgt. Ron Helus and a California Highway Patrol officer.
A "dedicated" police officer who was one year from retirement died in the California bar massacre while trying to stop the gunman, it emerged today. It is yet to be determined if he shot himself or was shot by other officers, according to Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean.
"You know, I've been a cop for 41 years, and I never thought I would see the things around the country that would happen", Dean said.
Police tell the Los Angeles Times that at least 30 shots were fired at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, which is about 40 miles west of Los Angeles.
The Borderline bar is a popular spot for university students, and on Wednesday night was hosting College Country Night.
People gathered near the scene of the shooting, hugging and crying as red and blue lights from police cars flickered in the background. Others jumped over chairs and broke windows to get out.
It was the second mass shooting in less than two weeks, after a gunman killed 11 Jewish worshipers at a Pittsburgh synagogue on October 27. Add Thousand Oaks Shooting as an interest to stay up to date on the latest Thousand Oaks Shooting news, video, and analysis from ABC News.
"Ongoing active shooter incident reported at Borderline", the Ventura County Fire Department tweeted.
"This guy just came out of nowhere and came out with a gun and shot people in Thousand Oaks, California", Harrah said.
"Sergeant [Ron Helus] was on the force for 29 years, was looking to retire in the next year or so and has survived by his wife and son", Sheriff Dean said.
Deputies are at Long's home, seeking to serve a search warrant, Dean said.
Sheriff's Office has confirmed the shooter is among the dead. He was later found dead at or near an office in the business. Neighbors told local news channel ABC6 that Long lived with his mother, who had expressed concern over her son's behavior.
She said she had planned to go with them but stayed behind to do some schoolwork instead.
