A Soyuz rocket successfully launched a European weather satellite November 6, completing a constellation of polar-orbiting satellites and providing additional reassurance about the reliability of the Soyuz.
It was the second Soyuz-ST launch this year, following the Soyuz-ST-B launch on March 6 to orbit four satellites for Luxembourg-based satellite services provider SES.
The Soyuz-ST carrier rocket was designed by a Progress design bureau in the Volga area city of Samara, for launches from the Guiana Space Centre as part of the joint Russian-European launch project, Soyuz-Kourou. That failed launch suffered a booster separation issue that triggered an automatic in-flight abort, separating its Soyuz crew capsule from the rocket.
Metop-C will operate in the same 817-kilometer sun-synchronous orbit, with a mid-morning crossing time, as Metop-A and -B.
The intention was that the space stations would succeed each other, but ESA said that the first two still work.
Some 60 minutes later Soyuz's upper stage delivered MetOp-C into orbit and contact was established through the Yatharagga ground station in Australia.
"MetOp-C will also ensure the smooth transition with the Eumetsat Polar System - Second Generation, developed in cooperation with ESA, with the objective to launch the first MetOp Second Generation satellite in 2022".
"Metop-C" has nine instruments on Board, to temperature, humidity, the composition of the atmosphere, the sea surface temperature, strengthening of wind, -to measure direction and speed, as well as the properties of clouds.
