The club announced that they would not be retaining Pat Roessler as the team's hitting coach, and bullpen coach, Ricky Bones, would be reassigned within the organization. Ricco and Minaya were at the annual general managers' meetings and Ricciardi was en route. Roessler's departure was first broken by Joel Sherman of the New York Post, marking the third consecutive season the Mets will have a different hitting coach.
DeGrom is coming off a season where he set the Major League Baseball record for the most consecutive starts allowing three earned runs or fewer.
Bones had been the Mets' bullpen coach since 2012, when he arrived as part of a shakeup to manager Terry Collins' staff.
Former Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr., who had been first-base coach, will become a front office adviser to the 44-year-old Van Wagenen, who quit as co-head of CAA Baseball's agency group and was hired October 30 to replace Sandy Alderson as GM.
It's expected the Mets will seek a veteran with National League experience for the bench coach role. Jim Riggleman, like he did in 2012, will interview for the job, according to an industry source. Van Wagenen worked as an agent for CAA, and some of their clientele includes Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, Yoenis Cespedes, Brandon Nimmo, and many more.
All of this potential turnover on the coaching staff could be a sign that manager Mickey Callaway is on a short leash. Van Wagenen has indicated that Callaway will be back in 2019, but he was not at all involved in the choice to hire Callaway.
"I think in my transition, he can be a valuable asset for me in the front office, " Van Wagenen said. "Tim Tebow is 30 years old", Francesa said on WFAN.
