While there have been injuries from the fire, there's no official tally of how many civilians and firefighters were hurt or possibly killed.
Fire crews Thursday morning were dealing with 40 miles per hour wind gusts.
Fire officials have issued evacuation orders for homes in areas of Chico, Calif., which has a population of roughly 93,000 people.
The fire prompted the closure of all schools in the Las Virgines Unified School District in Calabasas, as well as Viewpoint School, Montessori of Calabasas, Montessori of Calabasas Too and Muse School, the city of Calabasas announced this morning.
Residents have now been ordered to evacuate from several more towns to the west of Thousand Oaks, including Calabasas immediately south of Highway 101 and Malibu on the coast, as well as from the western edge of Los Angeles.
Local news reporter Tom Wait of CBS2 described the fire as "apocalyptic" with ember and ash raining down from the flames. Evacuations in Hidden Hills and all portions in the City of Los Angeles, have been revised from mandatory to voluntary. Espy said firefighters were creating "water curtains" between the homes and would remain on-scene until the threat was contained.
The brush fire ignited near Hill Canyon in Camarillo at 2:04 p.m., according to the Ventura County Fire Department.
Wildfires raging west of Los Angeles have forced school closures.
Rescuers used a bulldozer to push abandoned cars out of the way in order to reach a hospital and evacuate patients as the fire engulfed the building, Butte County Supervisor Doug Teeter said.
"It's been a roller coaster", one Oak Park resident told CBS2, explaining he made a decision to stay behind and watch over his neighbors' homes in the area of Kellwood Ct. and Churchwood Dr. and had the utmost faith in firefighters.
"Hopefully they're able to get it under control and save this neighborhood", he said.
Another homeowner, speaking to CBS2, said he feared his home would be among those lost in the blaze. "There's not a lot of buffer here but these guys are just awesome".
Dettorre is concerned that as the fire crosses the freeway "it will make its historic and typical run all the way down Pacific Coast Highway".
An evacuation center was established at Taft High School at 5461 Winnetka Ave.in Woodland Hills.
The "Hill Fire" was sparked Thursday in the Newbury Park Area, which is roughly one mile away from Wednesday's deadly mass shooting in Thousand Oaks.
"You pose a danger to yourself and emergency responders", Ventura County Fire Department Captain Scott Dettorre said about the drivers.
