A man is in a critical condition after he attempted to attack police on Bourke Street in Melbourne this afternoon.
Police initially responded to a report of a vehicle on fire near the corner of Swanston Street about 4:20 pm (local time), Victoria Police said in a statement.
The suspect has been taken to hospital in a critical condition under police guard.
Victoria Police Superintendent David Clayton told reporters there are no know links to terrorism.
Another person at the scene said: "I saw people running, screaming".
"One person has been taken to hospital with a neck injury".
The condition of the other two is not known.
The spokesperson confirmed that one person had died in the stabbing attacks and that the attacker was in hospital. "They are in a suspected critical condition", they said.
'The exact circumstances are yet to be determined at this stage.
Video posted to Twitter and broadcast on television showed a man repeatedly swinging an object at two police officers in the downtown area of the city.
Images from the scene show a large white sheet covering a section of the road near what appears to be blood.
The officers then retreated to the other side of the road as the attacker, dressed in a long jacket and grey trousers, ominously pursued them as horrified bystanders called on police to shoot him.
Witness Fiona told 3AW her friends had seen someone with a knife in the area and she'd been told he'd stabbed a security guard. They said they heard screams and cries from the crowd before they were rushed from the area.
He lunged at passersby and police before being shot. Police response was swift and overwhelming.
