With Missing Link, however, LAIKA is kind of going to straight to the basics for the very first time, as it appears as though they're telling a fish-out-of-water story mixed with a buddy comedy. Like everything LAIKA creates, the animation is consistently hypnotizing: the textures, fluid movements, and wide variety of expressions all show the great craftsmanship the studio is known for.
Bursting with humor, heart, and a profound message of acceptance and finding one's place, Missing Link is written and directed by Oscar nominee Chris Butler (ParaNorman).
At 8 feet tall and 630 pounds, Mr. Link - the fur-covered titular character played by Galifianakis - doesn't exactly live up to the film's title as he makes his way across from his home in the Pacific Northwest across the world to the valley of Shangri-La to find his long-lost relatives.
"Missing Link" follows the charismatic Sir Lionel Frost, voiced by Hugh Jackman, as he works to uncover a lost species of animal, linking the human race to its more beastly ancestors. "Along with adventurer Adelina Fortnight, our fearless trio of explorers encounter more than their fair share of peril as they travel to the far reaches of the world to help their new friend".
The voice cast also includes award-winning actors from all corners of the world, such as Oscar victor Emma Thompson (Sense and Sensibility), Stephen Fry (The Hobbit), Timothy Olyphant (Justified), Matt Lucas (Alice In Wonderland), David Walliams (Little Britain), Amrita Acharia (Game of Thrones), and Ching Valdes-Aran (Nurse Jackie).
The film comes to theaters Spring 2019.
You can't really go wrong with "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard" so right off the bat this trailer is solid, but digging deeper it's fun to see LAIKA traversing a wholly new genre.
