Joe Ingles matched his career high with 27 points and added a season-high seven assists to help the Jazz beat the Celtics 123-115 on Friday night in Hayward's return to Salt Lake City.
Hayward then suffered a fractured ankle injury in the Celtics' season opener a year ago and did not play the remainder of the season. Now, he's 100 percent healthy and able to take the floor, meaning that Utah fans get to welcome him back for the first time since he left.
"We all have picked it up, picked up our energy defensively, picked our focus up", Mitchell said.
Hayward played for current Celtics coach Brad Steven when the two were at Butler from 2008-10. They cut a 20-point deficit in the third quarter to just four points on four different occasions in the fourth quarter.
The Jazz started to pull away when they hit 3-pointers on each of their final four possessions of the second quarter to take a 58-51 halftime lead.
Ingles did most of his damage in a scintillating first half, scoring 20 points on an astounding 8-of-9 from the field with four made threes as he became the fourth Australian-born National Basketball Association player to score 20 points in a first half.
They held the dynamic Mitchell to just six shots until one minute remaining in the third quarter. Mitchell ignited the spurt by draining three free throws and driving for a layup on back-to-back possessions.
The Celtics scored on four straight possessions, culminating in Tatum's layup, to ignite a 15-4 run. "I can't tell you how much it meant".
In limited minutes, as he continues to work his way back from his injury, Hayward scored 13 points on 3-for-9 shooting from the field. He has made 512 3-pointers with the Jazz.
