However, Amazon has finally launched the long-awaited service in India and that too during the festive season.
While users are getting a free trial of 3 months, Amazon is giving a free credits to purchase up to 2 audiobooks without any charge along with free trial of 3 months to the Prime users.
Amazon's audiobook service will face competition from Google audiobook service which was rolled out in India along with 44 other countries globally by the search platform.
There is also a dedicated Audible Originals section, that offers audiobooks created by prominent storytellers exclusively for the service and produced by Audible Studios. In the days to come, we expect the number to increase.
Earlier in June, reports said that Amazon had plans to launch the Audible services in India around the festival of Diwali, and that it was looking to introduce locally produced books, narrated by Indians.
Users can listen to these audiobooks through the Audible iOS and Android app or through Amazon Cloud Player on the Audible website. Launch offers for select users include 90-day free trial along with a credit towards three free audiobooks.
According to reports, users will have access to almost more than 200K audiobooks and the company further aims to add Indian and global books on an everyday basis.
Also, one can not purchase audiobooks directly from the Audible app for iOS, similar to the Kindle E-books, likely to avoid giving a 30% cut of audiobook sales to Apple.
The Amazon Audible is already available in the U.S and there it cost nearly one fifth more than it is priced in India. Audible offers access to over 200,000 audiobooks and the subscription price starts at Rs 199 per month. Compared to the U.S, the Amazon Audible offerings in India are quite different. In addition, users who are unhappy with an audiobook can return or exchange the audiobook within one year of the purchase.
Unlike the U.S. where subscribers are entitled to access three titles every month, Indian users will have a limit to a single title.
Audible members can keep all the purchased audiobooks in their Audible library even if they cancel the membership.
As noted, the Audible comes with Rs 199 monthly plan which will pack on the title.
Audible is also offering standalone one month, six months and 12 months membership at an introductory pricing of Rs 299, Rs 1,345 and Rs 2,332 respectively.
