Bolivar County Sheriff Kelvin Williams told The Associated Press that the grandmother was taken in for questioning after the child was found dead Monday night in a home in the Mississippi Delta town of Shaw. The baby girl's body has been transported to the MS state crime lab for autopsy. Officials will work to determine if the toddler was dead before or after being placed in the oven, according to WTVA.
The grandmother hasn't been charged but Williams described her as being in custody. Both the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the State Crime Lab will participate in the investigation.
He said: 'I have been in law enforcement a long time and one of the hardest things that I have experienced is when you see a child as a victim.
He said authorities had no immediate answers in the death of the woman's granddaughter.
Jones is jailed on $500,000 bail.
"I've been doing law enforcement for 25 or 26 years now", Williams said. He didn't know if she had a lawyer. "It's trying for us to come upon a scene and see a victim such as this", Sheriff Kelvin Williams said to Metro.
The sheriff said the murder charge was filed after consultations with Bolivar County District Attorney Brenda Mitchell. Williams says autopsy results weren't yet complete Tuesday afternoon.
The child was found inside a beige frame house in the north end of Shaw.
The grandmother isn't now charged but Williams describes her as being in custody.
Williams says a relative found the girl.
Williams said that he wasn't yet certain whether mental illness was a factor in the case. There, a 20-month-old girl was found dead in an oven. Terri Robinson pleaded guilty to murder in 2012 in the death of Tristan Robinson.
