The chief Minister also urged the people to approach the tenth day of Muharram in a spirit of harmony and brotherhood. Imam Hussain, along with his companions, was martyred in the Battle of Karbala on the 10th day of Muharram or "Ashura".
On the first day of Muharram, the first month of Islamic calendar, the army of Caliph Yazid laid siege to Hussain and followers in the desert near Kerbala (in present day Iraq).
Although there are many joyful Islamic holidays, the nature of Ashura is more solemn. The cruel soldiers brutally killed Hussain and his 6-year-old son and took the women with them as captives.
We "vehemently discountenance some alarmist message that have gone viral on the social media insinuating that the Shi'a annual religious mourning procession, popularly known as Ashura will be violent in Abuja and other cities across the nation, with some saying people should stay indoors to avoid eminent clash with the mourners".
The mourning period starts on the 1st day of Muharram and lasts for 10 days until the death day of Imam Hussein. They mark Muharram by flagellating themselves with sharp objects, a practice which has discouraged by many Shia clerics.
The Shia community's main procession named Tazia was brought out from Old Dhaka's Hossaini Dalan Imambara at around 10am on Friday carrying the symbolic mausoleum of the Prophet Mohammad's two grandsons - Hussein and Hasan. 10th Muharram also marks the day when Prophet Musa (Moses, who is believed to be an ancestor of Prophet Muhammad) was saved from the Pharaoh of Egypt by God.
The Remembrance of Muharram is an opportunity for Muslims to pay respect and mourn the sacrifices made in the Battle of Karbala. While the Shias mourn the death of Imam Hussein on Ashura, Sunni Muslims hold a fast following Muhammad.
