A pool of mosquitoes collected late last month in the 40509 Lexington zip code that includes the busy Hamburg stores tested positive for West Nile Virus, the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department announced Wednesday.

Mosquitos from a trapping station tested positive for the potentially deadly virus August 29. West Nile virus, which is spread by mosquitoes, has been found in all areas of Vermont. Around 20 percent of people infected will experience symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting and sometimes swollen lymph glands or skin rash, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The most serious cases of West Nile virus infection can lead to encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain, which can be fatal.

No human cases are being reported.

The health district recommends wearing long-sleeved shirts, using repellant, limiting outdoor activity when mosquitoes are most active and draining standing water.
