Then came the "loud pop". And Ms. Teachout, who is pregnant and due in October, would be the first new mother to be attorney general; Barbara Underwood, who took over the department earlier this year after the resignation of Eric T. Schneiderman in the wake of allegations he physically abused romantic partners, is the first woman to be attorney general. By Saturday, Cuomo was left with no choice but to delay the opening of his father's bridge, over which he'd swaggeringly driven his favorite vintage auto just one day earlier.
Cuomo's opponents pounced, saying the governor rushed the bridge opening for political reasons and should have waited until he was sure it was safe.
"Is what happened this weekend enough?"
Cynthia Nixon's campaign cried foul on Monday over a pro-Andrew Cuomo mailer paid for by the Democratic Party that questions her support for Jewish people, with the candidate calling on the governor to apologize to New Yorkers.
"We share a progressive vision", Nixon said of the group, reprising a key campaign argument: "We can't just keep giving people something to show up and vote against, we actually have to give them something to show up and vote for".
Nixon has not publicly endorsed the BDS campaign. BTW: My name is Cynthia, and I am going to be the next Governor of NY. When the committee's executive director, Geoff Berman, dutifully stepped in to take the heat for Cuomo, he hardly improved matters.
But last minute snail mail won't fix the damage, according to Nixon, who's now demanding that the governor's camp robocall New Yorkers to disavow the flyer. "The contractor called Tappan Zee Contractors owns the old Tappan Zee Bridge", Cuomo said.
The mailer says Nixon opposes funding for Jewish schools, supports "racist, xenophobic" calls to boycott Israel over its treatment of Palestinians and that she has been "silent on the rise of anti-Semitism".
"It's the kind of thing you'd expect from Donald Trump", she added, cradling a cinnamon raisin bagel with lox.
"I didn't know about the mailer", Cuomo sad.
