U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton met Monday with Turkish ambassador to the U.S. Serdar Kilic at the White House.
Brunson was charged with committing crimes, including spying for the PKK - listed as a terrorist group by both the USA and Turkey - and the Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ), the group behind the defeated coup attempt of July 2016.
Relations between the two North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies have spiraled into a full-blown crisis over the trial of Christian pastor Andrew Brunson, who was held for 21 months in a Turkish prison until his transfer to house arrest last month - a move Washington dismissed as insufficient. "Treasury Secretary (Steven) Mnuchin is monitoring it very closely", Hassett, the chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, told MSNBC.
White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett said the Trump administration was carefully monitoring the financial situation in Turkey after its currency fell to a record low against the US dollar on Monday. The White House followed through on August 1 and sanctioned two top Turkish officials.
The lira, which closed at 6.9 per dollar on Monday, has weakened 45 percent this year, hit by worries over Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's calls for lower interest rates and worsening ties with the United States. Brunson, who faces up to 35 years in jail if found guilty, denies the charges. Erdoğan had previously suggested releasing Brunson in exchange for the extradition of a Muslim cleric residing in the United States.
The United States imposed sanctions on two Turkish ministers and doubled customs tariffs on Turkish aluminum and steel imports after Brunson was placed in house arrest. Ankara has vowed to buy liquid natural gas from Iran in defiance of Washington sanctions.
There has been no sign that the United States was prepared to negotiate with Turkey over Brunson, with Trump seemingly content for now to let his economic pressures continue to weigh on Turkey's economy.
