Ms Katie Stubblefield was just 18 when she attempted suicide by putting a hunting rifle below her chin and shooting herself. She miraculously survived, but was left with a severely disfigured face.
Stubblefield's story is will be told in a Nation Geographic cover story.
Stubblefield's journey is far from over though - she can not see, and is learning braille, and will also have further surgeries on her tongue and jaw. On the morning of May 4, 2017, Schneider's face was removed and transplanted onto Stubblefield in a 31-hour operation that involved a crucial decision mid-way through. "I felt so guilty that I had put my family through such pain".
The 21-year-old was put on the waiting list for a face transplant in 2016; over a year later a donor was found, making Katie the 40th face transplant patient in the world. Then, a new face was found: that of Adrea Schneider, who had died from a drug overdose.
While Ms Schneider was a registered organ donor, her grandmother Sandra - who reportedly adopted her when she was 11 due to her mother's drug addiction - had to approve the donation.
One hundred percent of Stubblefield's facial tissue was replaced along with her forehead, eyelids, nose, cheeks, jar, teeth, nerves, and facial muscles.
Now for the rest of her life, she will continue to be on medication to minimize the risk of transplant rejection, she is also taking physical and occupational therapy, including help from a speech therapist. She is also working on improving her tongue movement, which is limited. "I never thought of doing that ever before, and so on hearing about it, I just didn't know how to handle it", she told National Geographic.
With her new face, Ms Stubblefield now has a future to look forward to.
She hopes to eventually attend college, and become a counsellor, or a teacher. "We sort of ran toward her, to take care of her and I think we would do that for anybody but many of us are parents ourselves, we saw what her parents were going through", says Dr. Brian Gastman, Cleveland Clinic Plastic Surgeon.
