The conservative prime minister said that India would be only the fourth country - after Russian Federation, the United States and China - to launch its own manned space mission.
"India has made progress in the space domain", Modi said, delivering his Independence Day speech at Red Fort.
It is aiming to send an unmanned mission to the moon in January 2019, the Indian Space Research Organisation announced last week. GSLV-Mk III has got a capacity to carry such a module, Nair said. "They successfully completed the Mars mission".
India's first lunar probe Chandrayan-1 was launched by the ISRO in October 2008, and operated until August 2009.
"We are in the process of developing some of the technologies and already have some".
The US, Russia and China are the only three nations to have launched manned space flights.
Asserting that the expense of the project would not be much as most of the technologies have already been developed, the ISRO chairman estimated that it would cost less than Rs 10,000 crore and the spacecraft module would weigh around four-five tons. "The project has been underway, now we need to prioritise and achieve the target", Sivan told ANI.
When it achieves the mission, India would be the fourth nation to circle Earth after the Soviets, the Americans and the Chinese.
In the run-up to the first manned mission, said to be the largest project undertaken by the Indian space agency, the ISRO will conduct the next unmanned test flight by 2020. Chawla was one of the seven crew members who perished in the space shuttle Columbia disaster during re-entry into the earth's atmosphere in 2003.
K Radhakrishnan, former ISRO chairman under whose leadership the Mangalyaan mission was launched in 2013, termed the announcement of Gaganyaan mission a "turning point" for the ISRO. Denmark also has a manned space flight scheduled for 2022.
