"We talked about him possibly playing, and that's what he wanted to talk about, " Furyk said at Bellerive Country Club, where the PGA Championship begins Thursday.
"I think you're looking at a battle of giants", Furyk said. "You want guys who are in good form from the summertime on, guys who have had a good season". I went out and played nine holes yesterday and it was like, 'Who is this guy?' I started hitting a couple of good shots and it's been awhile, certainly, but, yeah, I struggled a bit with injuries and focus on other things, but it's not about me.
Justin Thomas clinched the fourth USA spot by winning the Bridgestone last week, and Bubba Watson, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and Webb Simpson hold the other four automatic slots. The former quartet have clinched spots already. Close behind Simpson is Bryson DeChambeau, followed by Phil Mickelson and British Open runner-up Xander Schauffele. Kevin Kisner is the only player among the top 20 in the US standings who played with Furyk, at the RBC Heritage.
Furyk will have four selections to round out the US team, and he's not bound to pick those selections based on Ryder Cup points. He will make three of his choices on September 3, and the final one on September 9.
He won't hesitate to pick young golfers.
Jim Furyk said he didn't request the pairing.
"I loved having the rookies on the team, seeing the fire in their eyes, seeing the spark they provided", Furyk said.
"It's no secret, we're trying to provide the best 12 players we can". But the 42-year-old has displayed an increasing commitment to team events as he has aged, and as next year's Presidents Cup captain and no doubt a future Ryder Cup captain, his experience could be invaluable.
"If he doesn't make the team on merit.it comes back to what's the makeup of the team, does he fit in there?"
"It's stressful, " Furyk said. "I probably will let them both know I didn't ask for it and just go play golf and have fun". By March I saw his game was in a lot better shape. "I haven't closed out those tournaments as I would have liked, but at least I'm putting myself in position, and that's all I can do".
The U.S. team has not won a Ryder Cup on the road since 1993, when Davis Love III, now 54, made a putt at The Belfry in England to seal a U.S. victory.
"I sit in a good place", Bjorn said this week at Bellerive. They have the home-course advantage. I think the golf course lends itself to a certain type of player.
Set to qualify for Europe's squad on European Tour points are British Open victor Francesco Molinari of Italy and England's Justin Rose, Tyrrell Hatton and Tommy Fleetwood with world rankings adding Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy, Spain's Jon Rahm, Sweden's Alex Noren and England's Paul Casey to the squad. After blowing a chance to win by finishing his final four holes bogey-bogey-par-triple bogey, DeChambeau was criticized for his interaction with victor and playing partner Richard McEvoy after the round.
"I might put a few noses out of joint by saying, but in my opinion, (he's) the best player that has ever played the game", Bjorn said.
"I guess the fear of losing and not succeeding always drove me to work hard and practice hard".
"I literally haven't set foot on this golf course since that week in 2001", Woods said.
