Singers and musicians quickly flooded social media in mourning her passing, which came on the same day that fellow USA music giant Elvis Presley died at his home in Memphis, the city where Franklin was born, 41 years ago.
"Iconic composer and singer-songwriter Carole King, who was one of the writers for Franklin's hit "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman", also expressed her admiration for the late singer. Her last live performance was November 7, 2017, for the Elton John AIDS Foundation gala. Franklin took soul music to a new level and inspired generations of singers who came after her.
To date, she is one of the best selling music artists of all time, having sold 75 million records worldwide. These songs would go on to earn her the title of Queen of Soul.
Franklin later married actor Glynn Turman in 1978, but they divorced in 1984.
"She will be missed!" he tweeted of the legendary singer.
She also performed at the presidential inaugurations of Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. It's like a callback to Franklin's treatment of more sentimental standards during her early recording career on Columbia, but invested with a luxe, contemporary atmosphere.
