The Houston Astros didn't announce any direct plans to continue or suspend its relationship with Papa John's, but gave a similar statement, expressing that the team was "incredibly disappointed with the statements made by Papa John's founder John Schnatter", while also saying that they feel "confident that the local franchisees and their employees share the Astros' commitment to diversity and inclusiveness".
The pizza chain is removing John Schnatter's face from its marketing materials, two days after he admitted to using the N-word during a company conference call.
Schnatter is Papa John's brand.
Schnatter's controversial comment came during a role-playing exercise during a May conference call, which itself was organized in the wake of his comments concerning the NFL, and placing blame on the league's national anthem protests for the company's sales, Forbes reported.
Asked whether she was daring the company to sue over the name change, Bendapudi said, "It's not that type of situation at all". Schnatter released a statement Wednesday apologizing, which said in part, "Regardless of the context, I apologize".
Bendapudi did not comment on Schnatter's reaction to the stadium being renamed. "This is our best decision".
A Papa John's spokesman confirmed the story to Ad Age, without sharing further details.
Papa John's stock is up almost 3% Friday on the news.
The Washington Nationals have severed ties with Papa John's days after founder John Schnatter resigned as chairman of the company's board.
Friday's decision did not touch on UofL's ties with Papa John's as a company, including an exclusive deal that allows only Papa John's pizza to be sold in the stadium. He also spoke about his childhood in IN and said, there, people used to drag African-Americans from trucks until they died.
While the stadium bore the name of the pizza company, the naming rights deal was with Schnatter himself instead of the company. While the decision to rename the stadium was effective immediately, Bendapudi was not sure when signage will be removed from the stadium.
