A woman originally from the Chicago area was shot and killed in Mexico, where she and her husband were celebrating their first wedding anniversary.
Taniana Mirutenko, 27, of San Francisco, was shot in the head Saturday as she and her husband were leaving a taqueria in the upscale neighborhood of Lomas de Chapultepec, KGO-TV reported.
The gunmen were on a motorcycle and were aiming at a bouncer at a nearby bar, Mexican authorities said.
She and her husband, James Hoover, were married at a church in the Ukrainian Village neighborhood and held their reception in Lincoln Park, her family said.
"We extend our honest condolences to friends and family members of the deceased", department spokesman Noel Clay said in an email.
Clemson economics professor Raymond Sauer said he doesn't remember many students from five years ago, but Mirutenko is an exception. "Today we were looking at flowers for the funeral", said Wasyl Mirutenko, Tatiana's father.
"We extend our honest condolences to friends and family members of the deceased", the Bureau of Consular Affairs said in a statement. Mirutenko's body will be returning to the USA tomorrow. "She would give 200 percent".

They described her "incredible work ethic" and passion for her job as news of her death emerged on Monday.
