England led after a superb Kieran Trippier free kick five minutes in but they were made pay for their failure to convert further chances by Ivan Perisic's second-half strike and Mario Mandzukic's extra-time victor.
"Perisic is a different kind of winger to a lot of others in his position", he said.
"Normally you look at wingers and they are just fast and creative". Fantastic in the air.
"So the way he wins that ball in the air [for Mandzukic's goal] and puts the ball into that space is only possible if you are very, very physical and dominant over defenders".
Perisic has scored twice and set up one goal in six appearances at the World Cup in Russian Federation so far, and is expected to play against France in the final on Sunday.
"So he was unbelievable by going there and winning that ball in the air".
