Seattle's Sue Bird was selected for her 11th All-Star appearance, breaking a tie for most in WNBA history with retired in star Tamika Catchings. The WNBA is going with a new format this season, similar to the change the National Basketball Association made for its All-Star Game, to have the top two vote-getters as captains who then choose their teams from the other 20 players who were voted in. Fowles, Moore and Augustus will get a chance to play in front of their home fans as the All-Star Game is in Minnesota on July 28. ABC will televise the game live at 12:30 p.m. PT.
Bird, the league's oldest player at 37, headlines the 22 All-Stars who were announced Tuesday.
Kayla McBride, Aces (2 All-Star selection): McBride returns to the All-Star Game after a previous appearance in 2015, her second WNBA season.
"Seventeen years ago, if you told me I'd be setting a new record with 11 All-Star appearances, I would have called you insane", Bird said. The two captains will then alternate picks until all players have been selected.
Bird is averaging a career-best 7.1 assists, which ranks second in the WNBA, and 9.7 points. It's the sixth appearance for Moore, and fifth for Fowles.
Last year, Stewart was billed as an early All-Star Game MVP favorite, but the 6-foot-4 burgeoning star forward finished with nine points, six rebounds and six assists for a West team that claimed a 130-121 victory.
Loyd sat courtside during the All-Star Game at KeyArena in 2017 and didn't hide her desire to be recognized as one of the league's greatest stars.
Allie Quigley, Sky (2 All-Star selection): An All-Star for the second year in a row, the two-time WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year (2014 and 2015) won the Three-Point Contest at halftime of last year's All-Star Game in Seattle. "I'll never stop pursuing that". She's also averaging a league-best 11.9 rebounds per game. The logo of the WNBA team the player plays for is in the top left with colour removed, Nike's logo on the opposite side.
Fans accounted for 40 percent of the vote, while current players, current head coaches and a media panel accounted for 20 percent each. Parker has been selected by WNBA President Lisa Borders to replace Moore as a team captain due to finishing third in the fan voting behind Moore and Delle Donne. Moore today informed the WNBA that she is unable to perform her captaincy duties at this time.
Moore was the leading vote-getter among fans (47,620).
"I'm glad that Maya turned down her role so that I can have the first pick", Delle Donne said laughing in a phone interview with the AP.
Delle Donne's team will be led by Seattle coach Dan Hughes, who has guided the Storm to the league's best record. The coaches earned their nods by their respective team's placement in the WNBA standings. The teams they choose will be announced at the start of Thursday's 8 p.m. ET game on ESPN2, when Delle Donne's Mystics face Dallas.
After all votes were tallied, players were ranked by position (guard and frontcourt) within each voting group - fan votes, player votes, coach votes and media votes. Every team had at least one player on the list except last-place Indiana.
