Drunk seagull threw up on a firefighter rescuing it from a rooftop

One RSPCA centre in West Hatch near Taunton, Somerset has reportedly had to deal with nearly 30 paralytic birds in a two week period, some of which have even been puking from excessive alcohol consumption.

"The birds appear disoriented and confused and struggle to stand", explained RSPCA vet David Couper. Experts have warned that they could be drinking leftover alcohol on the beaches of the southwest or eating grain by-products from a brewery in the area.

'They looked bad. Some have been so poorly they've died.

Inspector Jo Daniels said: "We think they're gaining access to some brewing waste products somewhere".

"Possibly from being exposed to high temperatures after falling unconscious".

'Others have recovered after a day or so of rest and rehydration.


"But it's odd because enquiries revealed these by-products should only have trace amounts of alcohol left after it's extracted".

Firefighters were called to rescue an oddly-behaving seagull on a roof, but by the time they arrived it had fallen off and was shaking its head.

"We took some video of one of the birds who is staggering around and losing his balance just like a person would if they'd had too much to drink".

Watch Manager in Charge Virgil Turner said: 'When we arrived he had already fallen off the roof, he was sitting shaking his head and he then tried to fly and he almost hit me in the face.

'The birds absolutely stink of alcohol when we collect them, so now our vans smell like pubs.' The RSPCA received more than a dozen calls about drunken birds from across the south coast.
