When President Donald Trump came out swinging against the Nord Stream 2 pipeline at the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit, he accused Germany of selling itself and its allies out to Russian influence.
"It is a tragedy. Therefore, choosing between Russian Federation and the United States, Germany is not willing to lose markets in the US", the politician said as reported by Apostrophe, a Ukrainian news outlet. It's a disgusting mistake.
"It means that when you're thinking about a new market provider, when you're thinking about a new innovation partner, we want you to think about America first", he said. "You've given up all of your strength". It's very bad for the German people.
"So we protect you against Russian Federation, but they're paying billions of dollars to Russian Federation, and I think that's very inappropriate".
The $11-billion pipeline seeks to double the existing Nord Stream pipeline's current annual capacity of 55 billion cubic meters and is expected to become operational by the end of next year. However, Merkel insists the project is a private commercial venture and is not funded by German taxpayers.
"I believe that Germany is going to be getting 50, 60 or even..."
President Trump stated that Russian Federation completely controls the FRG through the expansion of energy supplies through the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline. The Kremlin is confident that Nord Stream 2 will not make Germany dependent on Russian Federation. Just on Wednesday, Trump called Berlin "a captive of Russia" for participating in the project. We're protecting Germany, we're protecting France, we're protecting all of these countries.
Russian Federation is keen to press ahead with the Nord Stream 2 pipeline since it has the potential to double its gas exports under the Baltic Sea to Germany, bypassing traditional routes through Ukraine with which it has poor relations.
