Lisa Page - whose affair with Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Peter Strzok has led Trump to dub the pair the "FBI lovers" - was threatened with contempt of Congress charges after she failed to honor a subpoena to appear before the House Judiciary and Oversight Committees Wednesday over her role in politically sensitive probes of Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton.
A handful of House Judiciary and House Oversight committee members gathered an hour after Page's interview was scheduled to start to discuss next steps.
"I am very disturbed by this", Ryan told journalists at a press briefing Wednesday.
'Congressional subpoenas for testimony are not optional, ' he said. She has an obligation to come and testify. If she wants to come and plead the Fifth, that's her choice.
"Ex-FBI LAYER [sic] Lisa Page today defied a House of Representatives issued Subpoena to testify before Congress!"
House GOP lawmakers dispute Jeffress's exact timeline, arguing she had all the information she needed for an unclassified interview earlier in the day.
Infamous former Federal Bureau of Investigation official Lisa Page said through her lawyer Tuesday that she would not be testifying before Congress on Wednesday as they had requested.
Trump slammed them as he was in route to Belgium for a meeting with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders, mocking them on Tuesday for getting "cold feet" about testifying before Congress.
Strzok and Page both worked under former FBI Director James Comey during the FBI's investigation of Clinton's emails. The DOJ watchdog published a report last month that revealed messages between Strzok and Page which suggested the two of them, along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, would try and stop Trump from getting elected. "The record shows otherwise", Jeffress said in the statement, stressing that Page had already cooperated with the inspector general's probe and one other congressional panel. Total disgrace!,' Trump wrote on Twitter.
The first big case on Mueller's agenda comes later this month with his indictment Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort on an array of charges including money laundering, bank fraud, tax evasion, failure to improperly register as an agent of a foreign government and witness tampering. The report did not find that the conclusions in the Clinton investigation were tainted by political bias.
Strzok had a leading role in the Clinton probe and was removed from the Mueller investigation after the texts were discovered a year ago. Right?!' Page texted Strzok.
The Judiciary and Oversight panels have already spent much of the summer holding hearings and interviews critical of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department.
