China imposed tariffs on $3 billion of U.S. products in early April in response to the steel and aluminium measures.
Earlier, the Minister of economy of Turkey Nihat Zeybekci said that "Turkey is committed to the active and reasonable trade relations with the United States on the basis of reciprocity, but with the understanding that her honesty can't be one-sided".
"The total tariff burden being imposed by Turkey on the US is commensurate with the additional costs Turkey faces due to tariffs imposed on it by the US", Zeybekci said in a statement.
Turkey is being forced to respond to the ill-advised and unsupportable steel tariffs enacted by the United States while we hoped that we could resolve the issue through dialogue, the Ministry of Economy said Thursday.
Turkey imposes retaliatory duties on American goods.
The Turkish tariffs affect American imports of coal, paper, walnuts, almonds, tobacco, unprocessed rice, whiskey, automobiles, cosmetics, machinery equipment and petrochemical products.
Speaking about its own retaliatory move, the Turkish government called it "proportional, measured and created to protect the country's interests, while encouraging dialogue".
Turkey just became the latest country to hit back at the United States for its tariffs on steel and aluminum. The move has enraged traditional USA allies such as the European Union, Canada and Turkey.
In March, American President Donald Trump imposed a 25 percent tariff on imported iron and steel, and a 10 percent tariff on aluminum - since then the issue has been discussed heatedly among the US and its major trade partners.
On Friday, the 28-nation European Union will start taxing a range of US imports, including Harley-Davidson motorcycles and cranberries.
Turkey didn't receive an exemption.
The European Union, Canada and Mexico have all announced retaliatory tariffs against the United States. The US was Turkey's top market for steel in 2017.
According to Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) data, Turkey exported approximately $13.8 billion in steel and steel goods previous year, while $1.2 billion, about 9 percent of exports, was made to the U.S.
