Even as Washington agreed to suspend joint US and South Korean military exercises as the country pursues peace with North Korea and the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, Seoul is modernizing its military and purchasing new missiles and fighter aircraft.
Interestingly, the North made no secret of China's behind-the-scenes presence at the summit.
"The modalities are beginning to develop", Pompeo said, but said, "there will be a great deal of work to do". "There's much to think about".
"But don't say silly things", he said. "No, don't. It's not productive".
President Donald Trump took to Twitter to encourage Americans to "sleep well tonight" upon landing in Washington, D.C., early Wednesday morning after the landmark summit in Singapore between the United States and North Korea.
The KCNA report - which was also carried by the Rodong Sinmun, official newspaper of the ruling Workers' Party - also claimed that the president pledged to suspend military drills with South Korea, and lift sanctions on the North.
"USFK has received no updated guidance on execution or cessation of training exercises - to include this fall's schedule Ulchi Freedom Guardian", US Forces in Korea's Lieutenant-Colonel Jennifer Lovett said in a statement. He added, "I am equally confident that they understand there will be in-depth verification". Pompeo told reporters that the language used in the document encompassed those demands, even though they weren't spelled out.
And now here we are, talking seriously about not-nuking each other. That work, he said, was "beyond what was seen in the final document that will be in the place that we will begin when we return to our conversations".
China has repeatedly called for a "freeze-for-freeze" or "dual suspension" initiative, in North Korea suspends its nuclear program in exchange for the US and South Korea to suspend their joint military exercises in the region.
Pompeo said he expected the completion of the process "most definitely" within the next two years.
"So that's good for a number of reasons, in addition to which we save a tremendous amount of money", Mr Trump said. But Trump shouldn't get the credit for temporarily getting us out of the potential catastrophes he created while he destructively feeds his ravenous ego.
The South Korean government, which views the presence of USA troops and the military exercises as important to regional security, seemed to express nervousness about Trump's remarks.
He said many in the media were hoping that the talks would "blow up" and that Kim Jong would "humiliate and embarrass Trump".
What alarmed them more was Trump's throwaway promise to end "war games" with South Korea, which he described as "very expensive" and "very provocative". There's no question that the person who brought us to the brink of war was Trump, not Kim.
A report in North Korea's Rodong Sinmun newspaper, another state-run outlet, claimed on Wednesday that the USA agreed to offer rewards as North Korea moved toward ridding itself of nukes.
While saying Trump is "in the lead" on follow-up negotiations, Pompeo said, "I will be the person driving this process forward".
