U.S. President Donald Trump shakes hands with North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa island in Singapore June 12, 2018. The president would not elaborate on these hazy measures of time.
Trump vowed to rain down "fire and fury" on Pyongyang if it threatened the United States but instead in Singapore it was compliments that flowed, as the president described Kim as "talented" and said they had forged a "special bond".
There were worries, especially in Tokyo and Seoul, which have huge US military presences, about Trump agreeing to halt USA military exercises with South Korea, which the North has long claimed were invasion preparations.
The country's defence minister, Itsunori Onodera, said drills and the U.S. military presence in South Korea were "vital to security in East Asia".
North Korean state media lauded the summit as a resounding success, highlighting concessions made by the USA president.
Although Trump declared North Korea no longer poses a nuclear threat, many experts are divided on whether the summit produced anything substantial, such as a clear timeline of denuclearization. Today, the Kremlin publicly congratulated itself for supporting the Trump-Kim meeting in Singapore, Reuters reported.
"I want to bring our soldiers back home", Trump said, adding that it was "not part of the equation right now".
Mr. Trump said the USA will be continuing sanctions until denuclearization occurs - but suggested sanctions might be lifted earlier than many experts thought possible.
Kim has framed the switch as a natural next step now that he has what he stresses is a credible and viable nuclear arsenal capable of keeping the U.S.at bay. South Korea was also reportedly shocked by Trump's announcement that he would end American participation in "war games", and the later reversals and reversals of the reversals from administration officials only compounded unease about Trump's goals and competence.
"Kim Jong-un and Trump had the shared recognition to the effect that it is important to abide by the principle of step-by-step and simultaneous action in achieving peace, stability and denuclearization of the Korean peninsula", the report said. "North Korea has great potential for the future!"
Geng Shuang, the Chinese Foreign Ministry's spokesman, told reporters on Wednesday: "North Korea has stopped its nuclear tests, and the US and South Korea are practising self-constraint on their military exercises".
US Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said Mr Trump's cost reasoning for halting the exercises was "ridiculous".
Washington has described the drills as defensive in nature, but Pyongyang says they are a rehearsal for invasion and has long called for them to end.
Kim said that the "world will see a major change" and he and Trump "decided to leave the past behind" as they put pen to paper.
"I think this time what's different is we trust the two leaders, President Trump and Chairman Kim".
"I don't know exactly what the timing will be for our next conversation with the North Koreans", Pompeo said. Even in cases where the USA president has studied his briefing materials, unlike Trump, having others present can prevent a situation where the two nations disagree about what promises were made. During his press conference in Singapore, he turned to Pompeo when asked if there was a transcript.
On TBS, Conan O'Brien focused on Trump's gesture of inviting Kim to the White House. "They did not record it". It has not given the USA any information about them.
