The Central Electricity Authority and Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) are to formulate the necessary standards and regulations for wind-solar PV hybrid projects, such as the metering methodology and standards, forecasting and scheduling regulations, the renewable energy certificates (RECs) mechanism, grant of connectivity and sharing of transmission lines and more. As our electricity system transforms from a system of centralised synchronous generators to more diversified generation that includes more and more renewables, we need to find ways to deliver power system stability and security using less fossil fuels. This provides an innovative solution to accessing renewable energy for those who are unable to place solar on their homes.
The UTS feasibility study, which will be led by the Institute for Sustainable Futures, has the twin goals of considering both consumer demand and feasibility, and identifying barriers to adoption.
"Blacktown is a hotspot for rooftop solar and we are really excited to see how this trial goes".
ARENA CEO Ivor Frischknecht noted that showcasing how renewables can stabilise grids can help set the stage for more renewables to enter the country's energy mix.
"We are trialling solar gardens with the aim of helping renters, low-income households and those living in apartments save on their energy bills", said Dr Liz Develin, the NSW Department of Planning and Environment's deputy secretary of energy, water and portfolio strategy.
Solar gardens give those without rooftop capacity the ability to take part in solar power generation.
In the United States, solar gardens are the fastest-growing segment in the solar industry, contributing 200 megawatts of new capacity in 2016.
"While over 1.8 million households now enjoy the benefits of cheap solar power, unfortunately not every household owns a sunny roof suitable for solar panels", said ISF Research Associate and Director of Community Power Agency Nicky Ison.
"These trials will help renters, and people in apartments and low-income households who are now missing out on the benefits of rooftop solar to share in the renewable energy boom now underway in [NSW]".
