Recently, however, Welbeck has enjoyed a run in the team, weighed in with some important goals and looked particularly sharp.
Wenger believes Welbeck, who also scored in the UEFA Europa League quarter-final clash against CSKA Moscow in midweek, can make a valuable asset to the Three Lions as they prepare to make the trip to Russian Federation in June for the World Cup.
It means that with the World Cup coming on the back of a long gruelling season for most of England's players, Welbeck at least has the advantage of being relatively fresh.
"For Danny, it has been very good recently because he got games", said the Arsenal manager ahead of today's league clash against Newcastle United (14:40 kickoff). Maybe he would not be there now if he had played all the games.
"We know how good he is and I said that many times", said Wenger.
Arsene Wenger has predicted that Danny Welbeck's past knee injury problems could deliver a major unexpected boost to Gareth Southgate's England at this summer's World Cup. "He was a very good player".
Asked if Welbeck has taken confidence from that his England recall, Wenger replied: "Maybe".
Welbeck has been a valued member of the England squad over the years and has an excellent record at global level, registering 15 goals in his 37 caps, yet he did not feature in the October or November internationals this season.
"At the moment everybody is talking about [Harry] Kane and rightly so". But there is room for him [Welbeck]. If you are national coach, what for me is very interesting is that he can play wide - on the right, on the left - and also central.
