The Congress on Sunday released the name of its candidate for the upcoming biennial election to the Legislative Council of Bihar to be elected by the Members of the Legislative Council.
"I am thankful to Congress president Rahul Gandhi ji for reposing faith in me by declaring my name for council polls", Mishra told PTI. "I would continue to work hard for the party", he added. Elections are scheduled to be held on April 26 for 13 Upper House seats falling vacant on May 5. BJP ally Janata Dal-United is yet to formally announce the names of three candidates.
If no other candidates, apart from those named by the four parties, file papers by tomorrow, the results for all 11 seats could be declared on April 19, the last date for withdrawal of nominations, said the deputy secretary of Bihar Assembly and assistant returning officer, Bhushan Kumar Jha.
Nitish Kumar, Sushil Kumar Modi, Rabri Devi and Mangal Pandey are among those whose terms will end on May 6.
Asked about the background of the party's two new faces - Mahto and Anwar - Singh said both were "dedicated party workers". In Bihar, a minister from the Nitish Kumar government is also there in the list- Mangal Pandey, along with Sanjay Paswan, former Union minister from a Dalit community.
Former Bihar Chief Minister and partys national vice president Rabri Devi, state president Ramchandra Purbe, senior party leader Khurshid Mohsin and Santosh Manjhi are its candidates.
Since SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav has already announced to contest Lok Sabha polls from Kannauj, he allowed party state president Naresh Uttam Patel to file papers for the Upper House berth on his seat.
