It turns out that a 19-year-old medical aspirant had been impersonating as a doctor in All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for the past five months.
In February this year, an institutional FIR was lodged by AIIMS after a fake doctor was noticed at the main surgical emergency pretending to be a faculty of the Trauma Centre Orthopedics Department.
Khurram, a native of Bihar, lived in Batla House, near Jamia Nagar and during his stint as a doctor, even participated in events meant for doctors - from strikes to marathon. He used his forged identity to make friends across departments and among medical students.
Sources confirmed that there is also a medical diary issued in the name of Adnan Khurram. He also said that he liked to spend time with doctors.
On Saturday, when he the accused Khurram participated in a marathon organised by the doctors, some doctors got suspicious and asked him about his identity.
It is not yet clear why Khurram chose to impersonate an AIIMS doctor as the police said that he kept changing his statement regarding the reason, the daily reported. Although, one major reason was to get his family members preferential treatment at AIIMS, the other was due to his liking for the profession.
"Khurram has been observing his activities in the campus for the past many months so I chose to keep a watch at him". As he was not able to answer questions from the doctors in a satisfactory manner, he was arrested by the police.
HT quoted the Resident Doctors' Association (RDA) chief Harjit Singh saying that he recently became suspicious of Khurram's activities after which he chose to keep a watch on him. To assert his identity, he had even uploaded pictures on his social media accounts wearing a doctor's coat and a stethoscope around his neck. We found out that he had made different claims to different doctors.
Khurram has studied till Class X and has no criminal record. According to a report in the English daily DNA, the man used to identify himself as a junior resident doctor and it was only after some doctors shared his photo (online) that he was caught by the security personnel at the hospital. The report quotes Dr Abhishek Singh, vice-president, RDA AIIMS, as saying that as AIIMS has "at least 2,000 resident doctors", it is hard to know each and everyone personally. There are also photographs of him with politicians.
Meanwhile, a case under sections 419 (impersonation) and 468 (forgery for goal of cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against Khurram at the Hauz Khas police station.
