BJP MLA, Kuldeep Singh Sengar has been detained for questioning by the CBI in connection with the Unnao rape incident. The case was handed over to CBI by the central government on Thursday, a day after a Special Investigation Team (SIT) by the state government began probing the matter.
His comments come a day after a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader in Uttar Pradesh had claimed that the Chief Minister had chose to arrest rape accused MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar but his decision was changed after the intervention of a "prominent person". The father died under mysterious circumstances in judicial custody.
Family members of the survivor have previously said that the police had initially refused to register an FIR and had refused to take action against Sengar.
The Allahabad High Court took up suo motu cognisance of the case on Wednesday and on Thursday took a strong notice of the delay in the accused MLA's arrest.
According to the complaint to UP Police, victim's mother also alleged that while the MLA was raping her daughter, Shashi Singh stood outside the room as a guard. The case has been transferred to CBI finally after pressure mounted up.
Sengar, who won the Bangarmau assembly seat in the 2017 Uttar Pradesh elections, has been claiming innocence even as the state government came under fire for not acting against the political strongman in spite of repeated accusations. Meanwhile, the Centre issued a notification approving the CBI probe into the case, officials said later in the evening in New Delhi.
Earlier on Friday, the Allahabad High Court had told the CBI to arrest, not just detain, Sengar.
Sengar was taken to the CBI headquarters in Hazaratganj in Lucknow. A bench of Chief Justice DB Bhosale and Justice Suneet Kumar, taking cognisance of the gangrape case on a letter to the court by senior lawyer Gopal Swaroop Chaturvedi, will pronounce its order today. The third FIR was registered against the girl's father on the charges of violation of arms act and indulging in rioting.
The case came into limelight after the victim and her family tried to set themselves ablaze in front of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's house last week.
