Despite the Gujarat Police leaving no stone unturned to trace the identity of 11-year-old girl, who was reportedly murdered after brutal sexual assault for nearly a week, cops are clueless about the girl's family as well as the accused.
The body of the 11-year-old girl was found April 6 and the autopsy report has confirmed that she was raped several times before death.
The Police Commissioner appealed to people to come forward and help the police establish the identity of the girl. "Till now, we have not got any clue and are trying to identify the deceased", Police Commissioner Sharma said.
Police are now going through the list of missing persons to see if the victim fits any profile.
Police were first alerted by a Pandesara resident whose wife and a neighbour had spotted the body in the bushes during their morning walk on 6 April.
Police had earlier also said that they suspect that the girl was a migrant or brought to Surat from outside.
"The police are yet to identify the girl".
As massive protests are being held across the country over the rape cases involving minors in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua and Uttar Pradesh's Unnao, an equally gruesome incident has come to light in Surat, the diamond capital of India.
The police have announced Rs 20,000 reward for those who provide information about the girl.
Giving details on the case, Ganesh Govekar, Forensic Head, Civil Hospital, told ANi, "The girl's body had 86 injury marks including ones on her private parts". "We need to identify the girl to solve the case".
There is no denying the fact that Surat being PM Narendra Modi's home state Gujarat and BJP being at the helm of the state government, there is added pressure on the Surat Police.
Since the last few weeks, outrage over the barbaric Kathua and Unnao rape cases has spread across the country, with many demanding strictest actions against the accused in the case. The case was transferred to the Crime Branch on Sunday. There is indeed a possibility that the girl may have been raped, tortured and killed elsewhere. "Samples have been taken for forensic test to ascertain whether she was drugged or not".
