The Gujarat Assembly on Wednesday witnessed ugly scenes when the ruling BJP and opposition Congress members clashed in the House, leading to the suspension of two Congress MLAs for an unprecedented three years and a one-year suspension of another lawmaker from the party.
Meanwhile, the Congress MLA from Jam Khambhaliya Vikram Madam raised an objection and said the speaker that he was not allowed to ask the question, although he raised his hand.
Following which, another Congress MLA Amrish Der protested the suspension and supported him. The Speaker first warned them to return to their respective seats, and then suspended them from the House.
Apparently agitated over something told to him by BJP MLA Jagdish Panchal, Dudhat rushed from his place towards the treasury benches, grabbed a microphone from the desk and threw it towards Jagdish Panchal.
Assembly Speaker Rajendra Trivedi suspended Pratap Dudhat and Ambrish Der for three years, and Baldev Thakor for one year.
The commotion compelled the Speaker to adjourn the House for 10 minutes which was later extended till 2.30 p.m. Maadam and Der were escorted out by marshals, but Der re-entered the House through another gate and struck Panchal.
Earlier in the day, Gujarat state assembly turned into a fight club on Wednesday, when MLAs indulged into violence and resorted to slap and kick each other. "I am sad about my behaviour in the House but not ashamed of what happened in the context of what was said about my mother", he said. Another MLA Baldevji Thakor, who allegedly punched his BJP rivals in the assembly lobby, has been suspended for a year. Congress MLA Pratap Dudhat was suspended for the entire session.
The Congress members will demand the resignations of all the defected MLAs as well, so that they could go to the people to seek fresh mandate. In return, BJP MLAs collectively thrashed him inside the House. He objected that the leader of the opposition should understand the limitations of time for a question. The speaker adjourned the house for ten minutes, named Dudhat for five years term suspension and left but the effect did not stop there.
