"We're so proud of the kids", Mississippi State coach Vic Schaefer said. "I thought us and Texas would probably be seeded 1 and 2".
Seeded No. 1 in the Kansas City Regional and the No. 2 overall seed, Mississippi State will play Nicholls State, which will be making its first NCAA Tournament appearance, in the first round.
MSU will be in first-round action Saturday against 16th-seeded Nicholls State at 5 p.m. on ESPN2. "I'm thrilled we'll be able to have 10,000 fans in here for an NCAA Tournament game". The Bulldogs beat Oklahoma State 79-76 on December 3rd. CT is the top seed in the Albany Regional while defending national champion SC is the No. 2 seed there.
"To be the No. 1 seed is extremely special", said MSU guard Blair Schaefer.
MSU has wins over both Syracuse and Oklahoma State this season. "They are obviously trying to fix what they had broken the first game so it just makes the mindset much more intense".
The selection to the tournament was the 10th in school history for MSU, the fourth for Schaefer since arriving to Starkville in 2012-13. He's sent five of his six teams to postseason, including the last four to the NCAA Tournament. Schaefer is 8-3 in the NCAA Tournament in Starkville. The Bulldogs are coming off a stunning first loss of the season when they lost to SC in the Southeastern Conference Tournament championship game just over a week ago in a 62-51 contest. For the third year in a row, the Bulldogs will start that journey at home as hosts of first and second round games. With the Bulldog players and coach Vic Schaefer sitting on the front row, the crowd had to wait until halfway through the show to find out what they already know. "Now we've got to go defend it, that's the bottom line".
