Adam Schefter of ESPN reports, after numerous conflicting reports had come out, that the Minnesota Vikings and quarterback Kirk Cousins have agreed to a fully-guaranteed three year contract. He finished 10th among quarterbacks in fantasy scoring, which is an impressive feat considering he went undrafted in fantasy drafts that year. Free agents can begin signing with teams at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
The landmark deal will make Cousins the highest-paid quarterback in the league.
The Vikings won the NFC North comfortably, finishing well ahead of the Green Bay Packers, who were without Aaron Rodgers for most of the season. "No final decisions have been made", Cousins's agent Mike McCartney said.
The Jets also have many other holes to fill, so from that standpoint Cousins choosing the Vikings is a positive.
Rodgers is the better quarterback, by a wide margin, but he still has two years left on his current deal (which was once the biggest in National Football League history), reducing his leverage.
In three years as the starter in Washington, Cousins threw for 13,176 yards, 81 touchdowns and 36 interceptions while completing 67 percent of his passes. The money Cousins will make is not necessarily proportionate with the level of on-field success in his past.
The Vikings drafted Bridgewater with the 32nd overall pick in 2014.
As the Washington Redskins refused to commit to him long-term with a contract that reflected market value, Cousins played his hand perfectly with two straight fully guaranteed years under the franchise tag. But with Case Keenum going to the Broncos and Sam Bradford planning to sign with the Cardinals, Minnesota was forced to look elsewhere. That led to a big payday for a journeyman who had started eight games for the Houston Texans in 2013 and nine games for the Los Angeles Rams in 2016 before posting an 11-3 regular-season record as the Vikings' starter in 2017.
