Jimmy Kimmel and wife Molly McNearney separately made a decision to guard their own hearts after son Billy was born with a congenital heart condition.
"There were secrets we kept from each other that we revealed only after the second surgery".
Months later, Kimmel sat down with Oprah Winfrey in an interview for O, The Oprah Magazine's April issue to discuss that critical moment in his family's history and how he made a decision to candidly address his viewers last spring on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
"He'll have another surgery when he's around 6 or 7 years old", Kimmel told Winfrey, "but in the meantime, he's doing great".
"I don't know if that's right or wrong or common or uncommon".
In an interview on "O, The Oprah Magazine", Kimmel said he and his wife "didn't want to get too close" to Billy because the child's future was unclear.

When asked if it was "scary" to open up about his personal life and political points of view with his viewers, he told the media mogul, "I don't know if it was scary, but it was uncomfortable, and it's not something I looked forward to. I definitely felt a sense of relief when it was over", he said. "And according to polls I've seen, it has cost me commercially".
"I didn't really know what I was going to say until right before the show", Kimmel confessed.
"I know my job is, for the most part, to entertain people and make them laugh", he said. "That said, if I can be selfish every once in a while and talk about something serious that's important to me, then I do want to take that opportunity", Kimmel continued. "But I don't want to abuse my position". I pick my battles. "Ninety percent of the time, I'll joke around, but some of the jokes, I hope, make people think".
