The Shell Rock Republican stepped down after the political news site Iowa Starting Line published photos and a video of Dix kissing a female lobbyist in a Des Moines bar.
Dix did not comment on the circumstances surrounding his resignation as majority leader and as state senator, though Republican Senate President Jack Whitver alluded to the website's allegations in a statement. Charles Schneider, R-West Des Moines, filled in for Dix at the start of Monday's session and the majority leader did not make any public comments during the day's proceedings.
Legislative leaders in the Republican-controlled Iowa House have not commented on Dix, who had been a top Republican in the Senate for several years.
GOP Gov. Reynolds told reporters Monday morning she planned to meet with Dix in the afternoon. She said she is disappointed in what she is hearing. The ex-employee filed a lawsuit several years ago claiming she was sacked after reporting misconduct in the workplace that included the use of sexual language. "That suggests to me that we've failed the people of Iowa in terms of fixing the problem so far". I want to know the facts. It claims Sen. Dix is kissing a lobbyist for a municipality group.
According to information on iowasenaterepublicans.com, Dix has been in the Iowa Legislature since 1996 when he was elected to the Iowa House of Representatives.
This is a reelection year for Dix, who serves Iowa's 25th Senate district, which includes all of Hardin County, all of Grundy County and portions of Story and Butler Counties. He called for Dix to resign as majority leader. "I think he needs to make the decision to at least step down from leadership", said Johnson.
Senate Democratic Leader Janet Petersen issued a statement raising the possibility that state policy had been affected by Dix's relationship with the lobbyist.
The incident caps a swift response from Republicans in the Senate after the liberal website Iowa Starting Line published video and photos showing Dix and a woman together at a Des Moines bar. "This incident follows Sen".
Petersen used her statement to reiterate her criticism of Dix for how he handled a recent sexual misconduct case within the chamber, which involved a former Senate GOP staffer.
Reynolds said she hoped the majority party leaders could "move on" with the 2018 session in pushing plans to cut taxes, balance the budget and address other priorities would not be impacted by Monday's development.
