"My new national strategy for space recognizes that space is a war-fighting domain, just like the land, air and sea", declared Trump.
"We may even have a space force". We have the Army, the Navy.
The US President was speaking to military personal in San Diego and explaining his new strategy when this idea was proposed.
After extensive politicking the US Congress passed the 2018 National Defense Authorization Act in November.
Move over, Air Force. Air Force officials told CNN that this was an "unnecessary change in the force's existing space efforts".
The idea was finally dropped from the Pentagon's funding bill by the end of past year, but it retains some support in Congress, where advocates say the U.S. is facing significant strategic vulnerabilities in the face of Russian and Chinese pushes into space warfare.
Despite Trump's declared support of the idea, it is unclear how much he knows of the progress already made towards his stated goals.
He added: "I said, 'maybe we need a new force, we'll call it the Space Force, ' and I was not really serious".
Trump told the audience: "From the very beginning, many of our astronauts have been soldiers and air men, coast guard men and marines". Maybe we'll have to do that'.
"That's unacceptable that we have allowed that to happen, particularly in a day and age when it is essential to have those space capabilities to fight and win wars", he said.
The agreement states that any member state that launches a "space object" has jurisdiction over it, and is also liable for damages it causes.
