A Boston team ravaged by injuries had fumbled away a 20-point lead, but found itself up three with five seconds to play in regulation. "I feel like there were times we should have pulled away with it", said Terry Rozier, who had 21 points and nine assists for Boston.
Marcus Morris presumably heard the message in the huddle. Markieff Morris scored 20 points, Ian Mahinmi added 14 and Tomas Satoransky had 10 points for Washington, which played the night before but still had enough energy at the end to rally past the tired Celtics, who blew a 20-point lead.
"So twins do dumb s--, I guess".
Celtics head coach Brad Stevens had enough injured bodies to fill out a playoff-quality starting lineup (and add a sixth man to the mix) Wednesday night against the Wizards.
Tatum missed a free throw with 24 seconds left in regulation that would have given the Celtics a four-point lead, and another in an attempt to complete a three-point play with three seconds left in the first overtime that would have given the C's a one-point lead.
"Me being a veteran, I put that on me", Marcus Morris said. "Just for committing to the ball, knowing that they needed a three". "What we don't want to do is rush Kyrie back simply because we don't have Marcus [Smart] (thumb) and Jaylen [Brown] (concussion)". "But I think that we did a pretty good job initially, and then we should have just let Porter lay it in". "We'll do what's best for Kyrie in spite of what's happening to everybody else".
Marcus Morris' clutch three-pointer put the Celtics four up with 43 seconds left of normal time and looked to have sealed a home win.
As it turned out, the game even went to a second five-minute extension, as Jayson Tatum missed a free throw, which would've given the Celtics a one-point lead in the last few seconds of the first overtime.
Stevens also refused to blame Tatum's missed free throw for the defeat.
"I thought tonight that Marcus would probably have to go close to 35, 40 (minutes) for us to win because of the way that we were going to try to play ... he gave us nearly that, which is pretty impressive. I wish I hit that last shot, but we play again on Friday (in Orlando), so I'm gonna focus on that game".
'Missed free throws don't bother me.
It means Washington snap a two-game losing streak and keep pace with the No 4 seed Cleveland Cavaliers. "At the end of the day, you control what you can control".
Beal led the Wizards with 34-points, seven rebounds, and nine assists followed by Markieff Morris with 20 points.
Everything looked good for the Celtics the way the play started.
"We're going to fight regardless", said Morris.
To be down so many of their key players and still be in the game against a competitive Wizards team is impressive. Then Marcus Morris did something perplexing. "That's fun, just being out there with my brother and be able to compete against him". He had a turnover and missed a three in the second overtime, but Boston still came incredibly close to pulling out the win.
