Rome was covered in snow this morning (Feb. 26), a rarity in the Italian capital, which typically enjoys mild Mediterranean winters. As a result, Monday's modest snowfall brought excited young Romans out for a rare snowball fight or walk in the slush. Snow fell in Rome, and the Colosseum was closed.

Low temperatures are forecast to plunge into the single digits below zero Fahrenheit through Friday. At least five people died in incidents attributed to the weather.

The roofs of dozens of houses collapsed under the weight of snow in the Unsko- Sanski canton in north western Bosnia. The report says the accident happened around 11 a.m. Monday in the mountainous Gorski Kotar area that has been worst-affected by a spell of harsh winter weather in the country.
In southeastern Europe, the snow and cold have also closed schools and halted travel.
Croatia has also been gripped by freezing conditions, with towns along most of the Adriatic coast waking up to temperatures below freezing. Italy's civil protection agency even had to call on the military to help clear the roads.
Meteorologists are forecasting unusually low temperatures for early March.
Roman city officials asked places more used to seeing snow if they could borrow snow plows, according to Reuters.
