Smith is joined by Ceal Barry (coach), Rose Marie Battaglia (veteran, contributor), Chris Dailey (contributor - assistant coach), Mickie DeMoss (contributor - assistant coach), Chamique Holdsclaw (player) and Tina Thompson (player) in the 20 Anniversary Women's Basketball Hall of Fame Class.
Thompson won four consecutive championships with the Houston Comets after getting drafted first in the inaugural 1997 WNBA draft. She's helped the team win 11 national championships and over 1,000 games.
After graduation, she spent four seasons as head coach at Cincinnati and 22 seasons at the helm of the Colorado women's basketball program before retiring in 2005.
The class of 2018's official induction will be in Knoxville on June 9.
As for Thompson and Smith, their 60.52 and 59.61 win shares rate third and fifth, respectively, in the history of the WNBA.
Collegiately, she starred at Ohio State University, helping guide the Buckeyes to the NCAA Championship game as a freshman, and going on to break the Big Ten all-time scoring record for both men and women.
She has an impressive resume that includes two seasons as the associate head coach at Louisiana Tech, 20 seasons as an assistant and associate head coach under Pat Summitt at Tennessee, four seasons as head coach at Kentucky and a two-year stint as an assistant with the WNBA's Indiana Fever.
Smith was a three-time Olympic gold medalist, former Ohio State star, and led the Detroit Shock to two WNBA championships in 2006 and 2008. She was the league's No. 1 all-time scorer until being passed by Diana Taurasi a year ago. As a young girl, little did I know how good old-fashioned hard work and passion would affect my life in such a grand way. During tha time, CT has won 11 national titles and developing 19 First Team All-Americans. UConn only had had one winning season before Auriemma and Dailey took over the team. "You come here, you meet her, you're in the program and you see what she does every day - her ability to do the team-building stuff, the off-the-court stuff, and make sure you're ready to enter the real world after you leave this place". DeMoss has won over 800 games as an assistant at Tennessee and LSU. "Basketball continues to be a big part of my life".
The Class of 2018 was selected from a list of 10 finalists, which included former UK All-American Valerie Still.
Barry was the longtime coach at Colorado.
All-time coaching record of 510-284 in 26 seasons with 12 NCAA tournament appearances, including six Sweet 16, and three Elite Eight appearances.
"It's humbling and I'm just really thrilled about it", Barry told the Daily Camera of Boulder, Colo. I committed myself and it made me think about all the coaches and players, and it was like a family.
