A day after describing absconding cop Rao Anwar as a "brave kid", Pakistan People's Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari said that his comment was taken out of context as he only praised the former Malir SSP for his valor during the anti-MQM operation, ARY News reported.
There were 54 SHOs who were (involved) in the operations [carried out under the supervision] of General Naseerullah Babar (then interior minister). "53 of them killed while Rao Anwar was the one who survived", notified Zardari.
It was stated in a statement issued in Islamabad today.
Babar said the PPP co-chairman also denounced extra judicial killings as "abhorrent, criminal and unacceptable" and called for bringing to justice all those involved in it.
"Enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings are twins of a deepening curse", Babar said in the statement, reiterating that PPP would never support such occurrences.
"The former President realizes that his remarks made unwittingly in the flow of conversation may have caused anguish and has regretted it", read the statement.
After issuing a contempt notice to Rao Anwar, the court revoked his protective bail and ordered the ISI, MI and IB to assist in nabbing Anwar and submit a report in this regard in 15 days.
A three-member bench, headed by the Chief Justice Saqib Nisar, also directed the State Bank of Pakistan to seize Anwar's bank accounts.
"Rao Anwar called me on Whatsapp after the last hearing to confirm that he will appear before the court today (Friday)", Sindh IGP AD Khawaja informed the bench.
The court also directed the IGPs of all provinces to provide protection to the witnesses in the case after Khawaja informed the bench of threats to witnesses.
Without mentioning the Naqeebullah Mehsud killing case, he said the issue had been sensationalised by media, "Twitter and other social media brigade" and "that doesn't necessarily mean that it is a fact".
27-year-old Naqeebullah Mehsud, hailing from Waziristan, was killed in a fake encounter with police in Karachi on 13 January. Anwar and most members of his encounter team have since gone into hiding.
