The fixtures for the 11th edition of the Indian Premier League were announced on Wednesday with defending champions Mumbai Indians hosting two-time winners Chennai Super Kings in a bumper opening tie at the Wankhede Stadium on April 7. The IPL will be played at nine venues across 51 days. Delhi Daredevils and Kings XI Punjab will face off at Feroz Shah Kotla in the afternoon game before Kolkata take on Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Eden Gardens. Super Kings will also play the last match of the league phase, which ends on May 20, against Kings XI Punjab. It will also host the Qualifier 1 on May 22. The venues for the eliminator and the second qualifier are yet to be decided whereas Wankhede will host the first qualifier on 22nd of May. Their first home game against Delhi at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur is on April 11.
The Returning Chennai Super Kings, along with the Rajasthan Royals, were suspended for two years from participating in the IPL owing to their involvement in betting, which is considered to be an illegal activity in India, during the 2013 edition of the tournament.
The upcoming edition of the cash-rich league will feature 12 matches that will be played at 4:00 PM IST and 48 matches will start at 8:00 PM IST. In January, the Governing Council had approved the proposal - worked out with the host broadcaster Star - that afternoon matches would begin at 5.30 pm, and evening games would commence at 7pm.
However, a section of franchises who are 50 percent stakeholders in the IPL revenue model, expressed their grievances with the change in timings as it was done without consulting them. Public transport and players reaching their hotels late into the night were the other reasons for considering changes in the match timings.
Note: Matches scheduled to start at 8 pm unless mentioned.
