The total proposed investment in the 99 Smart City Mission would be Rs 2.03 lakh crore. While four cities nominated by UP could not get selected, one each from Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra could not make it to the list of total 99 cities.
The nine selected cities Including Silvassa, Erode and Bareilly among others have proposed an investment of Rs1,2824 crore, of which a little over Rs10,639 crore would go into small regions within these cities which are then expected to serve as lighthouses and show the way for the rest of the city.
The nine cities in the winning list are Silvasa (Dadar and Nagar Haveli), Erode (Tamil Nadu), Diu (Daman and Diu), Bihar Sharif (Bihar), Bareilly (UP), Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh), Moradabad (UP), Saharanpur (UP) and Kavaratti (Lakshadweep). Center government was set to announce 10 names, but Shillong could not submit its proposal.
The nine cities have proposed an investment of Rs 12,824 crore to develop 409 smart cities.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has started this mission in the year 2015. Meanwhile, the government announced commencement of the Liveability Index Programme in 116 cities.
An official of Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited, said, "First, there will be a review meeting with the secretaries on Friday".
Puri expressed satisfaction over the progress of the mission saying setting up of project consultants and Special Purpose Vehicles (SPV) took a long time and the results will be visible soon.
He further said the Centre has released Rs 2 crore to the city and it was supposed to form a special goal vehicle and appoint PMC (project management consultant) which the city has not done yet while "most of the other cities did so".
On the outcome of the mission, he said "Smart city" does not mean something from a "science fiction which will fall from the heaven" but it consists of redevelopment of existing areas which will enhance the living experience. 189 projects worth Rs 2,237 crore have been completed, and implementation is underway for 495 projects with a cost of Rs 18,616 crore; furthers tenders have been floated for 277 projects with a cost of Rs 15,885 crore; while 1,987 projects worth Rs 1,01,992 crore are at detailed projects report stage.
