The Chevrolet Silverado was last redesigned in 2014, and if this was a compact vehicle or a crossover, it would probably soldier on at least a couple more years. According to Alan Batey, President of GM North America and Global Chevrolet Brand Chief, the Silverado remains as "arguably the most important vehicle in the Chevrolet profile", despite the recent swing in SUV and crossover sales. Chevrolet is mixing things up with the 2019 Silverado. The shape of the front end has been improved to duct air around the tires, while the shape of the roof and the shape of the tailgate have been created to move air smoothly over the bed. The 2019 Silverado increased aerodynamics by 7 percent over the current model, aiding fuel efficiency and reducing wind noise. The theme of mixed materials continues on the front independent suspension, which features new forged-aluminum upper control arms that are lighter than the stamped component that was used on the old truck.
Chevy saved weight by using light materials in targeted applications, including aluminum for the doors hood and tailgate. "For example, a higher-grade alloy is used in the roll-formed, high-strength-steel bed floor, contributing to a bed that is more functional and lighter weight", Chevy reports in a news release.
The 8 different trim levels will offer 6 differ engine/transmission offerings, including an all-new 3.0-liter inline-six Duramax diesel offering. This includes new 5.3L and 6.2L V-8s with industry-first Dynamic Fuel Management that actively shuts off any number of cylinders, in a variety of combinations, depending on immediate needs to optimize fuel economy.
All engines are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission that General Motors developed in tandem with Ford. One in every seven vehicles sold a year ago was a full-size pickup.
Clever engineering trimmed 450 pounds from the weight of a V8 crew cab 2018 Silverado. This ranges from the familiar LT model to the newly-introduced Custom and Trailboss versions. There will also be a sporty RST.
Analysts and company executives say the Silverado and the similar GMC Sierra are among the highest-profit models for the company, generating a significant share of its $9 billion in North American pretax earnings for the first nine months of 2017.
Twelve fixed tie-down points, up from four on the '18 Silverado.
Along with sharper lines and shaplier sheet metal, the Chevy Silverado boasts more fuel-saving features than the last iteration, starting with a diet that shed 450 pounds from the overall mass, including 88 pounds cut from the frame alone.
The truck bed is nearly 7 inches wider than the previous model and the short box is 63 cubic feet.
The truck can also be ordered with lockable storage bins on either side of the bed that hold seven cubic feet of volume each. The 2019 Silverado will be available with a power up/down tailgate that can be operated from the key fob, interior button or by hand.
