"I am beyond thrilled to be stepping into this new role with 'The Walking Dead.' Working on this series and having the opportunity to adapt Robert Kirkman's wonderful comic has been a fangirl dream come true for me", said Kang.
Still, the show continues to be one of the top rated series currently on television and as such, it should come as no surprise that AMC has now renewed it for a ninth season.
Angela Kang, who has been with "The Walking Dead" since 2011, has been promoted to show runner to take over for Scott M. Gimple, who was the third show runner in the series after Frank Darabont and Glen Mazzara both exited the series. "I'm excited to continue working with Scott and the wonderfully supportive folks at AMC, and can't wait to share the next chapter of the story with our fans next fall".
Fans won't find out whether the decision was one they think was worth it until the story has officially played out, but the death of Carl is something they're going to have to get used to. This switch was likely in process for at least several months.
"The Walking Dead" season 8 is still ongoing with the second half of the season set to debut on Sunday night, February 25 with eight more episodes closing out the season before production begins this summer on season 9. Now with a female showrunner it will continue to pave the way for more shows to become more diverse by proving that adding diverse representation behind the camera creates an environment that leads to more compelling story telling and better character development.
"This is an enormously important day for the entire "The Walking Dead" television universe", said Charlie Collier, president of AMC, Sundance TV, and AMC Studios. Well, none of that has deterred network AMC's devotion to the show, as evidenced by today's announcement of its renewal for a ninth season.
Carl's death will change the direction of the TV show permanently.
In a press release, AMC describes Gimple's new role as "overseeing the entire "Dead" television universe, including The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead, and potential brand extensions on a variety of platforms". It will be very interesting to see where new showrunner Angela Kang take the characters on The Walking Dead.
