Forty-four-year-old Brian Keith Hawkins turned himself into California police on Tuesday over an unsolved cold case murder-from 1993.
McAlister's family reported him missing at the time, but his remains weren't found until the next year by a hiker. "I know the wrong can't be changed but this is the closest I can come to doing the right thing". Once in a rural area of Shasta County, Hawkins and the Culvers conspired to murder McCalister.
Brian Hawkins, 45, during an interview with ABC-affiliate KRCR news channel in Redding, California, said he wanted to speak about his involvement in the murder of Frank McAlister. The station said it called authorities to let them know what was happening, and called after the interview to say he was on his way to turn himself in.
In 1993, 20-year-old Frank Wesley McAlister was killed.
Hawkins told investigators he, along with Curtis and Shanna Culver, lured McCalister to the Shingletown area to rob him of money he had to purchase methamphetamine, the release said. Every minute of every day has been a nightmare It's kind of weird, Frank never got to have a life, but we were teenagers and now I'm 44 and still haven't even had a life and now most likely won't anyway.
An emotional Hawkins didn't go into details about the actual crime, but said that he wanted to do the right thing, saying that his relationship with God and the weight of the past 25 years led him to confess.
Online records indicate Shanna Culver was booked into Shasta County Jail and is being held on suspicion of murder.
He said that past year he reached out to McCalister's family.
Investigators say one of the Culvers confessed as well, but did not specify which one.
Hawkins said that there wasn't a moment in his life since that time that he hasn't been remorseful. Instead, he was robbed and stabbed to death-his body left to rot and his vehicle dumped at the nearest Costco.
Hawkins claimed Curtis Culver, who was 21, stabbed McAlister inside the auto, and that Hawkins later stabbed McAlister outside the vehicle, the complaint says.
Hawkins, 44, confessed Tuesday afternoon and named 46-year-old Shanna Culver and 45-year-old Curtis Culver as accomplices in McAlister's 1993 murder.
Curtis Culver, on the other hand, told police that Hawkins did all the stabbing, the complaint says.
During the interview with the TV station, Hawkins shed tears and appeared shaken. Hawkins said, "I talked to them several times and told them I was going to make it there so I could tell them what happened and I wanted their forgiveness".
Hawkins and both siblings have been arrested. McAlister was her only child, and she said the arrests bring her some relief, Wallace said.
